Description and Requirements
My formal title with the Holiday Inn this summer was Front Desk Agent/Intern. My job was to provide customer service to hotel guests. My duties included greeting guests, making room keys and packets, booking reservations, answering questions about hotel amenities, and ensuring customer satisfaction. To succeed in this industry, you must be friendly, attentive, and courteous. A bachelors degree is not required for this job but it is preferred. My internship required no previous knowledge of hotels, but all other new front desk hires do require at least one year of experience in the customer service industry. |
Benefits and Opportunities
I received $9/hr working the front desk. This job came with many perks including the IHG employee rate. As long as you are employed by an IHG hotel, you are able to book any of the hotels in this group at an extremely discounted rate. I came across multiple networking opportunities during my time at the hotel. I met many aggies that loved to talk to me about school and potential future jobs. I also obtained my TABC license and was able to work with our bartender a few hours a week. I had some great conversations with guests at the bar about my internship and my plans after college and I got to keep half of the tips so it was a great way to earn a little extra cash. |
New SkillsDuring my time at the Holiday Inn, I learned so much about customer service, but I also learned that there is no way to ever be perfect at it. Everyday at my job I was thrown into a new situation and I had to decide how to handle it as well as what information to relay to the guest. Customer service is a tough industry, but I became very good at handling most all problems with a smile on my face. I also learned how to navigate the computer system, Opera.
